How shredding and screening handle changing moisture in green waste

Fresh branches, dead branches and garden waste with sediment are in different states, and the moisture content will affect crushing, screening and storage.

Garden waste changes significantly with the seasons. The moisture content of pruned fresh branches is high, while dead branches are more brittle, and tree roots and cleaning materials may also contain sediment. Equipment selection should consider the most difficult incoming materials throughout the year, rather than just looking at one sample.

Material characteristics

  • The volume, density and material of bulky waste and mixed domestic waste change rapidly, and wood, fabric, sponge, plastic and metal may appear in the same batch.
  • Springs, long fabrics, ropes and films have a tendency to become entangled, and glass, stones, batteries and sealed containers need to be identified in advance.
  • The value of the project depends on subsequent sorting and receiving channels. Simply reducing capacity cannot automatically form usable products.

Key processing challenges

  • Long branches bridge and pop out, and roots and sand accelerate tool wear.
  • The screening efficiency of wet materials decreases, and it may generate heat or produce odor during storage.
  • Changes in the proportion of leaves and twigs will affect the particle size distribution of the finished product.

Equipment-selection criteria

  • Determine the boundaries of unloading, grabbing, conveying and shredding equipment according to the maximum incoming material, collection and transportation mode and peak beat.
  • Focus on checking anti-winding, automatic reversal, foreign object protection, cleaning convenience and shaft end sealing.
  • Configure magnetic separation, screening, air separation or manual sorting according to target components such as metals, wood materials, light materials, etc.

Typical process flow

The branches are manually inspected and quantitatively fed into shreds, followed by screening and removal of oversized materials. When used for compost, mulch or fuel, moisture content control, storage ventilation and downstream acceptance criteria need to be considered separately.
