Recycling car bumpers: how to handle paint and metal fasteners

The bumper is large in size, high in toughness, and comes with paint, foam and metal clips. Sorting after pre-disassembly and crushing will directly affect the quality of recycled materials.

Bumper is usually made of PP and its modified materials, but the actual incoming materials may also contain paint, energy-absorbing foam, lamp fragments and metal fixings. If the goal is high-quality recycled materials, pre-disassembly and material management are more critical than simple volume reduction.

Material characteristics

  • Incoming plastic materials often have differences in size, wall thickness, toughness and packing density. The difficulty of processing cannot be judged just by the name of the resin.
  • Labels, sediment, metal accessories, oil and moisture content can affect tool wear, cleaning load and finished product quality.
  • Volume reduction, external sales, cleaning and granulation, and reuse production have different requirements for discharge size, cleanliness, and fine powder ratio.

Key processing challenges

  • Curved long parts are easy to cross in the hopper, and tough materials need to be stably bitten.
  • Metal fasteners and bolts will enter the tool area, and paint and adhesive will affect subsequent quality.
  • The material formulas of different models and batches are not completely consistent, and the mixing needs to be controlled.

Equipment-selection criteria

  • First determine the maximum single piece size, shape and feeding method, and then check the hopper, feed port, pressing structure and conveying rhythm.
  • Select the tool structure, driving mode and whether to configure the screen according to the goal of primary volume reduction or subsequent fine crushing, and do not blindly pursue the production of fine materials at one time.
  • Use normal incoming materials and extreme incoming materials to test the materials together, record the bite, current, discharging and winding conditions, and then confirm the continuous operation configuration.

Typical process flow

The bumpers first undergo lamp disassembly, metal removal and material inspection, and then are conveyed, shredded, magnetically separated and finely shredded. When granulation is required, continue cleaning, dewatering and homogenization, and decide whether to add material sorting based on the final use.
